Among the many definitions of Tokenism at the crux is the meaning ‘to give the appearance of.’ If we apply this more broadly to the dance field what are we giving the appearance of? Is there a point when words (like diversity, inclusion, etc) become appearance rather than an actioned realities?  Where does the impetus come to use words which are not embodied? What does it mean to walk the talk?

Have you ever experienced or witnessed tokenism? Does tokenism have a way of reducing perception so we loose site of wider values through overfocusing on adjendas? What do we become blind to when our focus adheres to political correctness? What is missing?

We all live in a culture consumed by images, of ourselves, individually and collectively. While this is not necessarily an easy discussion it is surely a necessary one to understand how we can move beyond tokenism.

The panel will be facilitated by Silva Laukkanen (US/FI) joined by Adam Benjamin (UK) and Maylis Arrabit (FR), Naomi Holopainen and Joseph Tebandeke (UG). The discussion will be in English with British Sign Language (online). There is time for questions after the discussion.
